Dr. Wang I Ta Extraordinary Teacher Awards

Born in Taiwan, Dr. Wang I Ta embarked on his piano journey at the age of ten and received formal training at the National Taiwan Normal University (BA) under Prof. Lina Yeh, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University (MM) under Prof. Boris Slutsky, and the University of Minnesota (DMA) under Prof. Alexander Braginsky.

Dr. Wang is the recipient of the Rising Star Award from the National Concert Hall in Taiwan, the Hutchinson Scholarship (University of Minnesota), and the Rosenberg Scholarship (Peabody Conservatory). He also won the Schubert Club Music Competition, the Walnut Hill Concerto Competition, and the Eleanor Bell Watson Competition. In addition to his formal education, he attended and performed at renowned festivals such as the TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute (now Piano Texas), the International New York Keyboard Festival, and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory – The International Summer School.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with orchestras including the KLPAC Orchestra, Camerata Youth Orchestra, UM Symphony Orchestra, Hunan Symphony Orchestra, and Longwood Symphony Orchestra. His concerts in Taiwan were sponsored by the National Culture and Arts Foundation.

In addition to his performance career, Dr. Wang has served as a juror, panelist, moderator, and guest speaker at various local and international events, including the Hamamatsu PIARA Piano Competition (Taiwan Preliminary), Singapore International Competition (Malaysia Preliminary), Singapore Raffles International Music Festival, Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, Sandakan International Music Festival, Muar Youth Piano Competition, Gold Star International Music Competition, International Conference of Performing and Visual Arts, International Symposium on Arts, Culture, and Community Engagement, and UM Research Webinar (UMR), among others.

Many of his students have achieved notable success in competitions such as the IMKA Music Competition, London International Music Competition, Bassil Fantasia Music Competition, UCSI National Music Competition, Southeast Asia (SEA) Piano Competition, Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, Aswara International Piano Competition, Malaysian Piano Competition, Euroasia Youth Music Festival and YAMAHA Scholarship Malaysia, Taiwan National Music Competition and so on.

He is a senior lecturer at the Music Department of the Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya. He focuses on piano performance, pedagogy, and mindfulness in his teaching and research.
