Ong Keng Choan Biography
Mr. Ong started learning Guzheng from a friend’s recommendation. He fell in love with this
musical instrument after his first experience with it and from then on, the journey began in the
end of year 1996.
Fast forward to year 2011, he established the DT Guzheng Ensemble as he foreseen the
potential in Guzheng as this instrument can also performed equally well in ensemble
coordination. He aimed to break the traditional rule that Guzheng is just a solo playing
instrument.  
In May 2013, he participated in The 3 rd International Guzheng Competition (Malaysia Division)
and won the 2 nd Runner up. In August, he represented Malaysia to participate in The 3 rd
International Guzheng Competition Finals which was held in Hong Kong and was awarded
Bronze prize under Youth group category.
In June 2014, he led the DT Guzheng Ensemble members to participate in the 1 st UTP Musical
Instrument Competition and was awarded Gold prize under Open Ensemble category.  And in
November, he performed with invited guest performers from Beijing China.
In June 2015, he participated in the 2 nd UTP Musical Instrument Competition and once again he
was awarded Gold with Honor under Open Ensemble Category.
In January 2016, he organized and hosted the 1 st DT Guzheng Ensemble Concert. In June, he was
invited by Malaysia Traditional Musical Instrument Festival 2016, to perform together with
Guzheng players from countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
In May 2017, he organized 2 nd DT Guzheng Ensemble Concert. In July, he led the DT Guzheng
Ensemble members to participate in The NAFA International Music Instrument Competition at
Singapore and were awarded Bronze prize under Non-Professional Group category.
In August 2018, he was awarded the Excellent Guidance Award from Nanfeng Malaysia
Traditional Musical Instrument Festival 2018. In November that year, the 3 rd DT Guzheng
Ensemble Concert was held.
In June 2019, he won 1 st prize under the professional group online competition from China. The
following month, he was again awarded the Excellent Guidance Award from NanFeng Malaysia
Traditional Musical Instrument Festival. With this achievement, he was invited as the guest
performer in Hong Kong. 
In May 2021, he was awarded with 1 st prize from International Internet Music Competition
IMKA. 

Throughout the years, beside of his usual role as the founder of DT Guzheng Ensemble, he has
always been very active in the industry. He took part and encouraged his students in
participating in local and overseas competitions, organized various activities such as student
recital & internal assessment, intensive & master classes and arranged public talks, seminars for
all Guzheng lovers both on and offline.
